Useful information for pensioners in Slovakia
In this article, we aim to provide detailed information about pensions in
Slovakia to help pensioners understand how their pensions are paid and what
options they have when receiving them. In the text below, the Social Insurance Institution answers the most common questions about
pensions.
How is the pension paid and to whom?
The pension may be paid not only to the recipient himself, but also to the legal representative, the person
responsible for the dependent child, the statutory representative of the establishment or a special
beneficiary.
When is the pension paid?
Pensions are paid in advance for each month. For example, if you receive your pension on 20 January, it is
for the period 20 January to 19 February.
What are the pension payment options?
You can choose to have your pension sent to your bank account, paid in cash,
sent to your spouse’s account, to a social services facility, or to a religious order.
Can the pension be transferred to a spouse’s account?
Yes, if you make a written request and have the right to dispose of the funds in this account, your
pension can be sent to your spouse’s account.
Can I change the way my pension is paid?
Yes, you can request a change in writing or in person at the Social Insurance Office. When applying for
pension payments on account, use the forms available on the Social Insurance Institution’s website and at their
offices.
How long does it take to change the way my pension is paid?
The change will be made no later than three months after the application has been submitted. For example, if you apply on 10 January, your pension will be paid in the new way from 20 April at the latest.
What are the most important responsibilities of a pension recipient? Every pension recipient must notify the change of address in writing. Other obligations depend on the type of pension, for example:
- For early retirement, you must report the commencement or termination of compulsory
pension insurance. - Disabled pensioners must have medical check-ups.
- Widows and widowers must report a change in status or termination of care of a dependent
child. - Recipients of orphan’s pensions must report the completion or interruption of their studies.
Do I need proof of residence if I receive a pension from the Czech Republic?
Yes, but from 2022, proof of residence is submitted to the Czech Social Security Administration only once
per year.
