In the show Generation, which was broadcast on 8 June 2024, psychiatrist MUDr. Žigová addressed an important topic – loneliness and loneliness of seniors.

In an interview, Dr. Žigová talks about how loneliness can seriously affect the mental and physical health of older people. She points out that loneliness is one of the biggest problems facing today’s ageing population, leading to depression, anxiety and even increased mortality. It stresses that the solution is to create communities, promote social contacts and provide emotional support for the elderly.

How do you define loneliness and what are its symptoms?

Loneliness can be one of the most serious problems faced by older people. “Loneliness is not just about physical isolation. It’s more of a subjective feeling, where a person feels that they don’t have enough social contacts or that they lack emotional support,” explains MUDr. Žigová. This condition can lead to a number of health complications, including a deterioration in mental health, which often manifests itself in depression, anxiety or feelings of worthlessness.

How does loneliness affect the physical health of seniors?

MUDr. Žigová points out that loneliness can have a direct impact on physical health. “Loneliness is often associated with lowered immunity and increased risk of chronic diseases. In older people, it can even lead to reduced mobility, as a lack of social contact can lead to them moving around less and caring less about their health,” says the expert. These physical manifestations can be exacerbated if depression or other psychological problems accompany them.

What are the options for dealing with loneliness in seniors?

MUDr. Žigová stresses that the solution to loneliness should be comprehensive and include different levels of support. “It is important for seniors to stay active and maintain social contacts, whether with family, friends or through community activities. Support from family and community is also important and should focus on regular contact and support,” says Žigová. In the interview, MUDr. Žigová also touched on the topic of day centres and facilities for the elderly, which she described as very important for the elderly. She stressed that these places provide seniors with a space for social contacts and activities that can significantly contribute to improving their psychological well-being and reducing the feeling of loneliness. As she stated, “ It is extremely important that seniors have the opportunity to spend time in the company of others, share their experiences and engage in a variety of activities.” These centres can play a key role in their daily lives. It also highlights the importance of prevention and early recognition of the signs of loneliness so that intervention can be taken before serious consequences occur.
